Questions about counting.
Why does X count my post differently from every other platform?
X does not count the characters you typed. It bills every link at a flat 23 characters no matter how long the URL is, and it weights emoji, CJK and Hangul at 2 each while Latin letters and common punctuation cost 1. Every other platform here counts the text as written, so the two numbers only agree on a plain-Latin post with no links.
Why is a link always 23 characters on X?
X rewrites every link to a t.co address before it publishes, so the length you see is not the length it stores. A 12-character link and a 200-character link both bill as 23. Shortening a URL before posting to X therefore saves you nothing.
Does an emoji count as one character?
Rarely. On X a whole emoji counts once, at a weight of 2, including multi-part sequences like a family or a flag. On the platforms that count raw text, that same family emoji is 11 characters, because it is really four people joined by three invisible characters. It is the single biggest source of a count you did not expect.
Does X Premium raise the character limit?
Yes. A free account is held to 280, and every paid tier — Basic included — unlocks long posts up to 25,000 characters. Flip the Premium switch on the X row above to count against the higher limit instead.
